This is from a time in the 80's when I was REALLY into the subject.
I was driving from a new town 15 miles or so to our old town. I saw a dog in the road ahead, so I looked in my rear-view mirror in case I'd have to stop (checking for oncoming vehicles). There behind me was another dog. Looked to the right down the only other street in this small town: another dog.
"This must be an omen of some sort," I said to myself, as I had defined an omen as being something unusual, usually from nature, that is attention-getting or quirky in some way. (I now know that it does not have to be from nature.)
So I tried to think of what it might mean. The first thing that came to mind was a part of a book I had just read, in which the characters are going to a town called Three Big Dogs. The reason they were going there was to meet an old friend of one of them, whom he'd not seen in quite some time.
I surmised that the Omen meant that I would run into an old friend that I had not seen in some time. I didn't realize until later that afternoon that that was exactly what happened. I was going to a Wal-Mart in my old home town (which I did quite frequently without ever meeting old friends--especially since I don't have an overabundance of those), and the moment I stepped out of my car... "Hey, John!"
It was a guy I'd gone to high school with; a good friend who I had not spoken with in over a year, perhaps 2. I had lost contact with him and figured he'd moved to a larger town to "make it" (as it had always seemed he'd wanted to do).
Like I said, I didn't realize it at the time. But later, when I did, it struck me hard: I had predicted the future. I had actually predicted something that happened less than an hour later.
Fascinating stuff, and now that I seem to have some time on my hands, I intend to look into it in more detail.
If you have any ideas or want some, you can e-mail me at jdmizer (at) hotmail (dot) com. That was like my crowning achievement though. Don't ask for how to win the lottery. I sure as heck haven't! ; )
