How brightly beautiful, how synchronistic and sensitive to coincidence are the fauna, the farm animals and domestic pets? Recently, while bushwalking up in the High Country I paused to take a breather. The shadows were lengthening near the river I'd been seeking. I'd removed my pack and one boot to dig out an embedded pebble when I felt a presence. I looked up to see the biggest male kangaroo I'd ever seen anywhere. He was escorting his mob: a female with a joey and a couple of older youngsters. He was staring at me, sizing me up. I looked back, holding his gaze. A wonderful contact. Was it imagination or did we exchange thoughts and an understanding? After some three minutes he ushered the female and the joeys ahead across the track toward the river, but remained standing there watching me. I knew better than to offer him a sandwich. I felt him saying something to me and instinctively turned to see one of the nastiest long Brown snakes I'd ever encountered. It was ready to defend territory. I snatched my pack away and retreated. When I looked back to where the big 'roo had been standing, the area was empty. He'd hopped away to join his family. I was grateful to the big fella. He'd alerted me to a real and nasty danger. Was it all coincidence? Synchronistic? Animist perception?
